Have you ever flipped through a magazine and passed an advertisement without even realizing it? We all do it. Sometimes an ad has plenty to say, but nothing that makes us stop and listen.
After years of designing magazine ads, I’ve learned that a good advertisement doesn’t have to tell your entire business story. It just needs to make the right part memorable.
One Message Beats Ten
I understand the temptation to squeeze everything into an ad. Services, specials, phone numbers, awards, social media handles, and maybe the company picnic while we’re at it.
But when everything competes for attention, your most important message can disappear.
Before designing, I like to ask one simple question: What do we want someone to remember?
Maybe it’s a seasonal offer, a new service, or simply the name of your business. Give that message room to shine.
Give the Eye Somewhere to Land
A strong headline, a compelling image, and a little breathing room can do more than a crowded page full of information.
And no, every empty corner doesn’t need another badge, banner, or giant exclamation point. 😂 Sometimes the space you leave alone is doing important work.
Make the Next Step Obvious
Once you’ve caught someone’s attention, don’t make them solve a mystery. Should they call, visit your website, or stop by your business? Make that next step easy to find.
My approach to print advertising is simple: attract attention, communicate clearly, and make it easy to respond.
If your next ad needs a fresh set of eyes, I’d love to help you make every inch count.
