Ever start a project with ten exciting ideas and realize they’re all headed in different directions? That’s usually when the design process starts feeling like a road trip with five people giving directions. Nobody needs that adventure.
When I begin a design project, I want more than a list of things to include. I want to understand how the finished piece should feel and what it needs to communicate.
WHAT’S THE OVERALL VIBE?
Should the design feel bold, welcoming, sophisticated, playful, or something entirely different? Those words may sound simple, but they help guide decisions about imagery, layout, and the overall visual personality.
I also like seeing examples of what someone is drawn to. Not to copy another business—absolutely not—but to understand the qualities that appeal to them.
A LITTLE INSPIRATION GOES A LONG WAY
A mood board can bring those ideas together. It might include photography, textures, packaging, advertising, or even a piece of architecture that captures the right feeling.
The goal isn’t to collect every attractive thing on the internet. That’s an inspiration rabbit hole, and those can get pretty deep.
The goal is to identify a consistent direction before spending time polishing details.
TRY THIS BEFORE YOUR NEXT PROJECT
Gather three to five examples you genuinely like. For each one, write down what appeals to you: the simplicity, the energy, the organization, or the feeling it creates.
Then look for what those examples have in common. You may discover that what you really want is clarity, not more decoration.
That’s the takeaway: a clear visual direction makes design decisions easier and keeps the finished piece focused on its purpose.
Planning a new logo, ad, or brand refresh? I’d love to help you turn those ideas into something that works.
