Behind the Design: A Little Monster With a Hugmungus Personality!

How a teenage spelling mistake inspired a memorable brand identity for Hugmungus Hobbies.

Sometimes the best business names come from the most unexpected places. And sometimes, they start with a spelling mistake!

When I first learned the story behind Hugmungus Hobbies, I couldn’t help but smile. The client shared that the name originated when he was a teenager and misspelled the word humongous. Instead of disappearing as a funny childhood memory, that spelling eventually became the name of his business.

And just like that, something completely unintentional became something uniquely his.

I love stories like this because they remind me that great branding doesn’t always begin with a perfectly planned idea. Sometimes, the personality is already there. It just needs the right creative direction to bring it to life.

Meet Hugmungus: The Monster Behind the Brand

Hugmungus Hobbies caters to a community of collectors and hobby enthusiasts who enjoy everything from trading cards and gaming to RC cars and collectibles.

Preliminary SketchThe business already had something special going for it: a quirky little monster mascot that the client loved and had been using on his packaging.

My job wasn’t to completely reinvent that character. It was to help him grow into something that could represent the business across a much wider range of applications.

That’s an important distinction.

When a client already has an element of their brand they connect with, I believe it’s worth understanding why it matters before suggesting changes. After all, successful logo design isn’t always about starting over. Sometimes it’s about recognizing what’s already working and finding ways to make it even better.

Giving a Gentle Giant More Personality

One of the most enjoyable parts of this project was developing the monster’s personality.

We didn’t want him to look like an aggressive sports mascot or a creature ready to chase someone down the street. Quite the opposite!

The goal was to make him a lovable, slightly awkward, larger-than-life character with a personality that collectors of different ages could appreciate.

Think of a gentle giant who’s a little goofy, a little curious, and impossible not to like.

Through the design process, I refined his expression, posture, and proportions while preserving the familiar features that made the original mascot recognizable.

His oversized horns, playful eyes, and relaxed stance all help communicate that personality.

Rather than making him look intimidating, I wanted him to feel like a character customers would enjoy seeing again and again.

And personally, I think he’s got quite a bit of charm!

Making the Name Just as Memorable as the Monster

Of course, with a name like Hugmungus Hobbies, the lettering needed plenty of personality, too.

The challenge was creating a bold, playful logo that could hold its own alongside the mascot without competing for attention.

I developed a custom lettering arrangement that brings the two words closely together, creating a strong, unified design.

The name HUGMUNGUS takes center stage, while HOBBIES fits naturally beneath it.

The result is a fun, recognizable wordmark that feels connected to the character and the collecting community.

One of the things I enjoy most about custom logo design is finding that balance between creativity and functionality. A logo can have all the personality in the world, but it still needs to be clear, readable, and recognizable.

For Hugmungus Hobbies, we were able to bring those qualities together without sacrificing the playful spirit of the brand.

A Little Surprise in Every Package

Here’s where the project became even more fun.

The client’s existing packaging gave us an opportunity to think beyond the traditional logo.

We explored a version of the monster inspired by the classic Kilroy Was Here illustration, with Hugmungus peeking over the edge of a surface.

It’s a simple idea, but one that opens the door to some creative possibilities.

Imagine opening a package of collectibles and spotting that goofy little monster peeking out from the inside of the box or along the edge of an envelope.

It’s unexpected, playful, and perfectly suited to the brand.

For collectors, the excitement isn’t always limited to what’s inside the package. The experience of receiving and opening an order can be part of the fun.

Small touches like a custom sticker or a familiar mascot can help turn an ordinary shipment into something a customer remembers.

That’s the kind of thinking I enjoy bringing to brand identity projects—looking beyond the logo itself and considering how people will actually experience the brand.

One Character, Plenty of Possibilities

As the project developed, I wanted to make sure Hugmungus had room to grow.

The completed identity includes several ways to use the logo and character, whether together or independently.

That flexibility is especially valuable for a business involved in collectibles and hobby merchandise.

From packaging and stickers to hats, shirts, drinkware, and promotional items, the mascot can make an appearance in different ways while keeping the brand recognizable.

The full logo makes a bold statement, while the monster’s head can become its own little signature on smaller items.

I particularly enjoyed exploring the merchandise applications. There’s something satisfying about seeing a character move from a concept on the screen to something that looks right at home on a hat, hoodie, or collectible sticker.

And for a business called Hugmungus Hobbies, having a mascot customers might actually want to collect feels especially fitting!

Building on What Makes a Brand Special

Every branding project is different, and that’s part of what keeps this work exciting after nearly 30 years in graphic design.

Some clients come to me with nothing more than a business name and an idea. Others, like Hugmungus Hobbies, already have a story and visual elements they care about.

My approach is to listen first, understand what matters to the client, and then use my experience to develop a design that supports their goals.

For Hugmungus Hobbies, that meant preserving the heart of the original character while giving him a stronger personality and a more versatile identity.

The result is a playful, approachable brand built around a name with a story, a lovable monster, and plenty of opportunities to connect with customers.

And to think, it all started with a teenager misspelling one word!

Sometimes the things that make a brand different are exactly what make it memorable.
