Your Packaging Is Talking. What Is It Saying?
Picture this: someone walks down a store aisle, glances at your product, and keeps moving. Your packaging had its chance to introduce itself. Unfortunately, it may have whispered when it needed to speak up.
I’ve spent years working with packaging design, and one thing has stayed consistent: the outside of a product matters long before anyone discovers what’s inside.
The Shelf Is a Busy Place
Packaging competes with dozens of other products, sometimes in a matter of seconds. It needs to answer a few questions quickly: What is this? Who is it for? Why should I care?
That doesn’t mean covering every inch with a headline, a badge, and seventeen exciting claims. Your package isn’t applying for a job. It doesn’t need a three-page résumé.
Make the Important Stuff Easy to Find
I look at packaging as a conversation with a clear starting point. The product name should be easy to spot. The main benefit should make sense. And the design should feel like it belongs to the brand.
Of course, packaging also has practical work to do. It needs readable information, accurate details, and space for anything the product category requires. Good looks don’t get to cancel the fine print.
Try the Three-Second Test
Here’s something you can do today: place your product beside a few competitors, step back, and give yourself three seconds to look.
Can you tell what it is and what makes it different? If not, the design may need a clearer visual priority—not necessarily more decoration.
I believe great packaging should make a product feel approachable before a customer ever picks it up. If yours could use a stronger introduction, I’d love to help.
